RACING CLASS
Sport Class Air Racing, introduced in 1998 at Reno National Air Races, showcases innovative high-performance kit-built aircraft. With simple rules, this adrenaline-fueled race captivates aviators and the aviation industry alike, featuring plane speeds exceeding 400 mph, wingtip to wingtip, just 50 feet above the ground.
Cornerstone Project
Our Cornerstone Project – T.I.E. Air Racing – is a model for all future projects. It takes a large swath of skill sets to build, modify, operate and maintain an air racing aircraft. These are all skills that are used in many different careers. The sights, sounds, power and speed are the elements of the project that we use to attract the youth to engage with our race team and learn about what it takes to field a competitive air racer. The youth that participates in this project not only get to engage in an exciting project and learn about these different careers, but we will provide education and a pathway to pursue these careers.
Our Team
We are Team TIE, led by Tim and Danielle Slater. Our passion for air racing stems from our aviationbased upbringing. Our mission: preserve air racing and reignite interest in skilled trades across America. With our race plane, the NXT, we’ll travel the country for an unprecedented outreach program. Our ultimate goal is to inspire the next generation, showcasing alternative options to college and making a positive impact on air racing and beyond.
TIM AND DANIELLE
TIM SLATER
Tim’s passion for mechanics and aviation began at a young age, learning from his adventurous electrical engineer father. By 20, he held both pilot’s and A&P Mechanics licenses. Tim’s diverse work experiences led him to start Centurion, focusing on manufacturing and performance. He also co-owns R&R Climate, an HVAC company. Frustrated by the scarcity of skilled workers, Tim sees an opportunity to combine his love for air racing and promote trades.
DANIELLE SLATER
Danielle’s love for aviation began early, working on R/C jet planes with her father and flying on Boeing 777s. Her interests expanded to include trucks and hot rods. Despite majoring in Air Traffic Control, she now works in aviation history at the Vintage Wings & Wheels Museum. Her experiences have fueled her passion for preserving trades as valuable options for younger generations
The Nemesis NXT, born from the brilliant minds of Jon and Patricia Sharp, is a legend. This two-seat, single-engine airplane is crafted from molded carbon fiber and powered by a rare, top-notch Lycoming TI0-540-NXT engine. With kit #8, Team Nemesis continues its legacy of record-breaking speeds in the Sport Class race.
The Glasair III is a high-performance, single-engine, kit-built aircraft manufactured by Glasair Aviation, LLC. It is an advanced version of the Glasair I and II models, designed to provide improved speed, range, and handling characteristics.
